Canon v. Tamaron

After attending the workshop Saturday, my sister in law Michel was desperately wanting to find a new lens with a wider apeture.  Currently low on funds (for photography anyway), she decided to browse KSL Classifieds (similar to Craig's List).  She found a Tamaron 28-75 2.8 lens that fits a Canon mount.  They were asking around $200.  These are the lenses new:  Canon 24-70L 2.8 and Tamaron 28-75 2.8

I have the Canon version and Michel bought the Tamaron lens.  We decided to put them to the test.

Michel took both pictures with the same camera (Canon 40d).  They have the same light source but are taken at a slightly different angle which could account for some of the color variation.   The top picture is Tamaron and the bottom picture is Canon.  I think that the Canon lens was easier to focus.  The price difference REALLY makes the matter much more interesting!

I've been eyeing that same Tamron lens for awhile along with some others by Tamron. I've also been looking at a similar one that just came out by Sigma other than it is an 18-50mm since I don't have a full frame camera. I've read a ton of reviews for all lenses and hear some people love them and others say die hard Canon all the way. I know I want sharper images than I am currently getting. I've always used Tamron lenses and not been happy with the sharpness factor but they were low end lenses. I am very torn and leaning toward saving my pennies and getting the Canon lenses, but it is tempting to get the other when the price is so much better.

Looking at these two pics you posted, I actually think the top one looks better, but I don't know if it's the color cast on the bottom one or if it really is sharper. Hmmmm...I can't wait to see other responses since I am on the verge of purchasing a similar lens.

I thought the Canon lens focused faster than the Tamron. I couldn't tell the difference in sharpness. I like the top one better. But, when I pay attention to the skin tone I might like the bottom one. It seems like a crisis... but for me not knowing sharpness from ISO, from f-stop, and shutter speed the Tamron rocks my world. (just kidding I know all of that because I took a phat photo class) I am the smartest photog ever...

Michel (yo mama) you sound like the smartest photog ever, look at you go girl :) For some reason the canon (bottom) picture looks more sharp and crisp to me but as my husband will tell you..... I always pick the most expensive ANYTHING!!!!

ooooh, how interesting! i am so glad you did this. i have to say also, before i saw which was which, i thought the second picture was sharper. but at the same time, for $200, why not use it until you can afford the real deal?
